A CONVERTED CAR
OFFER OF A LIFT
SEQUEL IN COURT
(By Telegraph—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. There is one motorist who will be chary of accepting lifts from strangers in future. He was on his way to Oamaru on Christmas Day when his car broke down and he accepted a lift in a stranger's car near Oamaru. Both were arrested and this morning in the Magistrate's Court they were charged with unlawfully converting the car. The explanation offered by the passenger in the converted car was accepted by the police, who offered no evidence on the- charge. The man pleaded not guilty and the charge was dismissed and his name suppressed. The driver of the converted car, Vivian Harvey Were,' a mechanic, aged 22, of Ham Road, pleaded guilty and was remanded until January 4 for sentence. ' Chief-Detective Dunlop said that Were hired the car, which, was valued at £260. He gave a wrong name and j borrowed his uncle's driving licence to hire the car. When arrested the car had travelled between 800 and 1000 miles.
