LEAVING AUCKLAND
In honour of Mrs. C. Bates, retiring secretary of the Society for the Protection of Women and Chiidren, who is leaving Auckland to make her home in Wariganui, a morning tea was held Tiy members of the executive committee at Milne and Choyce's on Wednesday, states the "Auckland Star." The tables were attractively decorated with sweet peas, and on exhibition was the beautiful silver tea service presented to Mrs. Bates from members of the executive committee. The guests were received by Mrs. A. E. Devore and Mr. J. B. Donald, and the presentation was made by the Rev. P. S. Smallfield, for many years chairman of the executive committee. Apologies for unavoidable absence were received from Mr. Ernest Davis, president of the society, Sister Esther, Mrs. Preston Chambers, and others.
'In the course of the valedictory speeches which were given by many members of the board, the greatest appreciation was shown of the fine qualities and devotion to duty displayed by Mrs. Bates in her work for the society. In the words of one speaker, "widespread sympathy, tact, patience, discretion, and love are the qualities looked for in the work performed by our socetiy," and it was in the possession of these attributes that Mrs. Bates had endeared herself to clients and committee alike.
