NELSON, This Day.
In sentencing Leonard William Roden to fourteen days' imprisonment for being intoxicated while in charge of a motor vehicle, the Magistrate (Mr. Maunsell) said there- was heavy holiday traffic on the roads, and no doubt there would be a crop of serious accidents. In this case the man had his wife and children in the vehicle, and if he; had not been intercepted by a police sergeant he would have driven and might have caused a tragedy.
"There is only one thing for it; that is imprisonment; that is the only course to take to stop it," said Mr. Maunsell. "If people drive cars' when intoxicated they must go to gaol." ' ,
