PRICES BY THE TAIL
On the way from. G.ournay to Dieppe there is a road-side sign reading: "Pasture your horses here. Short-tailed horses, 10 cents a day; long-tailed horses, 20 cents a day."
. A Parisian who was passing by was surprised at its wording, and asked why the distinction. He was given the very sensible answer: "A shorttailed horse'is bothered all the time by flies. To shake them off he has to use his head. While he is chasing them off with his head he can't eat. A long-tailed horse can handle the situation with his tail without raising his mouth from the grass. The men of Normandy would never pay as much for grazing a short-tailed horse as for p. long-tailed one, so I have made a reduction in my prices for them."
