AUCKLAND, This Day.

The New Zealand Chess Congress was opened by Councillor A. Rosser this morning in the absence of the Mayor, Mr. E. Davis. There are fourteen competitors in the championship and ten in the premier reserve. No women's tournament is provided, but women who iiave-i entered are playing in the premier reserve. The draw is being made this afternoon, and play will commence late in the day, so that one round can be concluded.
