PASSED IN CITY

POLICE INVESTIGATING

Advantage of the shopping rush on Christmas Eve was taken to pass off counterfeit bank-notes of the £5 denomination Five cases were discovered in different shops on Thursday afternoon.

Warnings were circulated to many of the principal shops by the police on Christmas Eve, and the Reserve Bank of New Zealand has issued a general warning to the public regarding the circulation of forged £5 notes.

The notes detected in Wellington would pass if not closely examined, but are not good foi'geries. The outlines are not clear-cut, as in the genuine notes. Some of the lettering on the front of the notes is missing, the figures in the numbers are different in outline, and the back design is particularly poor. Unfortunately, many of the differences do not show up until a forged note, is compared with a genuine one, so that the greatest care is necessary The word "governor" after the signature of L. Lefeaux is missing.

The police are making inquiries with a view to locating the press on which the notes were printed.
