ASSEMBLY HALL

HUTT HIGH SCHOOL

FROSPECTS NOW VERY GOOD

" For several years past the Hutt.Valley High School Board of Governors has had before it the. ideal of providing an' assembly hall for the .school, and in this respect .'.has had come 'disappoihtments. A sum of money: was promised out of the estate of. one* of the founders.of the school for; the "purpose of an. assembly hall,, but when, application • was made to. tHe:..trustees.- -'the money failed to~ materialise.; "Olher efforts were made by the'board to'raise a fund,' but it appeared. that many years would elapse before the desire.of \he board would be realised. . >;. ■'. .

Last week, however,' the Government announced that it was prepared,tp subsidise assembly halls £2 for £I,'which makes the project for the Hutt.Valley a practical proposition. NX the meeting of the board last ■ evening,' th> principal (Mr. J. N.Millard) "announced that, with the assistance of the Parents' Association,-there was in the hallsfund £672, and that there was a certainty, of augmenting the fund by another £200 within, a. year. ..Mr. Millard said that if the board could obtain guarantees for this £200 tenders for the hall could at once be called. ■ ■ .-..':

Mr. D. A. Ewen immediately offered to underwrite^ £100 and1 Mr. H.. G. Teagle to underwrite the other £100. ';

Mr. W. V. Dyer said the board was most for.tunate. in thus being "able! to face the prospect of an immediate, erection of the. hall and on ■ his',motion-'it was decided to place . oir record)the board's appreciation of , the generous offers of Messrs. Ewen and Teagle. . • .'

It was decided to request the Educa* tion Department to make available the subsidy which will make possible the calling of immediate tenders .for. a building estimated to cost approximately £3000. ■.■'■' ■.
