STATE GOVERNOR ARRESTED
CHARGE OF CONCEALING BANK THEFTS
RUTLAND (Vermont), Dec. 1. Governor Smith, of Vermont, who is also president of the Rutland Marble Savings Bank, has been arrested and charged with concealing bank thefts. The arrest followed the conviction of a bookkeeper, John Cocklin, a war veteran, for the embezzlement of 124,000 dollars over a period of nine years. The latter stated at his trial that Governor Smith had promised that the shortage would never be known.
