SOUTH MAIN TRUNK
CLARENCE RIVER BRIDGE
(By Telegraph—Presi Association.t CHRISTCHUr6h, ; This Day. The Public Works Department has accepted the tender of Mr. Alan Moore, of Christchurch; for the construction of cylinder foundations and concrete piers for the bridge to. be erected over the Clarence River for the South Island Main Trunk railway. The bridge will consist of twelve spans, each of 120 ft, and it is estimated that it will take two years and a half to construct. It will be downstream from the existing traffic bridge. The contract does not include steel girders. In practically all cylinder bridges that have been built in the past it has been the practice to. have two circular cylinders to each pier. In the Clarence bridge there will be only one ovalshaped cylinder in each pier, the object of this design being to facilitate excavation for the' cylinders through the heavy boulder formation in the river bed.
