WILL NOT MEET KING
LABOUR MEMBERS
PROTEST AGAINST CONDITION
OF UNEMPLOYED
LONDON, November 17,
A sensation was caused in political circles by the refusal of two Labour members of the House of Commons, Messrs. A. Bevan and W. H. Mainwaring, to meet the King when he visits the distressed areas in South Wales on November 18 and 19.
Mr. Bevan, in a letter to the Minister of Labour, Mr. Ernest Brown, who is to accompany his Majesty, pays a tribute to the. King's sympathy with the unemployed, but regrets that this should be used to conceal not only the negligence of his Ministers but their active persecution of the poor. He adds that his Majesty's visit will occur immediately before the imposition of still further reductions in the appallingly low allowances to the unemployed in South Wales.
