CRICKET AWARDS

UNIVERSITY BLUES

FOUR PLAYERS HONOURED

On 11 to New Zealand University Cricket Council's recommendation cricket Blues have been awarded by (.he New Zealand University Students' Association to K. F. McN. Uttley (Otago University), N. D. Henderson (Otago University), W. Tricklebank. (Victoria University College), and W. F. Vietmcyer (Victoria University College). Several other prominent University cricketers were not eligible for the oward. The two Wellington players, Tricklebank and Vietmcyer, received Ihcir awards during a break in play at Kolburn Park on Saturday, Die presentations being made by Mr. A. M. Cousins, president of the New Zealand University Students Association.

The following particulars oC the new Blues are supplied by Mr. J. Carrad, lion, secretary of the New Zealand University Cricket Council:— Kenneth Frank McNeill , Uttley (Otago University) has for several years been a member of the Otago Plunkct Shield team. A sound and attractive bat, he signalised his opening appearances in Plunket Shield cricket by the consistency with which he collected his fifties, and in 1934-35 he gained a place in the South Island team against the North in Wellington. An outstanding field, his spectacular work in the outfield in that game is still remembered. Last season for Otago University he averaged 29.5 with the bat, with a highest score of 64 not out. Uttley is also a New Zealand University Rugby Blue and an Otago representative Rugby player. Norman Douglas Henderson (Otago University) has represented Otago and is a medium-fast right-hand bowler of promise. He is also a forcing righthand bat, and last season performed very ably with the ball for his University, taking 26 wickets fof 147 runs. Average, 6.04. • William Tricklebank (Viptoria University College) was well in the running for a place in the New Zealand eleven last season, but on being selected for the New Zealand University Rugby team was absent during the greater part of the season in Japan. Three seasons ago (1933-34) Tricklebank bowled sensationally in the Wellington senior grade and succeeded in taking 60 wickets for 758 runs; average, 12.63; at the same time scoring 306 runs at an average of 20.40, with a highest score of 86. He followed up his success in the following season, scoring a century against Institute and again getting among the wickets and gaining a place in the -Wellington Plunket Shield team, in all matches, and also playing for the North Island against the South, where he again performed successfully. Despite his absence for the greater part of last season Tricklebank captured 18 wickets at an average of 15.88.

William Frederick Vietmeyer (Victoria University College) has for years been one of his club's most useful allrounders. As a colt ho made a sensational debut into senior ranks with the ball and was hailed as a coming representative bowler, but he suffered a lapse of form, and was just beginning to show signs of recovsring his ability when he was transferred from Wellington to the country. Since his return he has been one of the college's most useful cricketers and last season took sixteen wickets at an average of 20.62 and scored 330 runs, average 38.12, with a highest score of 113. He is a medium-paced opening bowler, keeping a very steady 'length, being particularly dangerous when the ball is new, and a fine forcing middle wicket batsman. A smart and safe field, he can at times be really brilliant.
