TREMENDOUS FORCE

FRENCH EXPLOSION

BODIES STRIPPED OF CLOTHING

Vnited Tress Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. (Received November 17, 2.20 p.m.) MARSEILLES, November 16. The manager of the powder works at Saint Chamas (M. La Rogue) was blown to pieces by the force of the explosion, and 29 bodies have been taken from the wreckage. Journalists and photographers are not allowed to approach the ruins, but three other bodies, stripped of clothing, and one of them decapitated, can be seen. Two others, also naked, were hurled 200 yards.

The Mayor of Saint Chamas, who was walking in the street, was thrown down and injured, but paid no attention to his wounds and organised assistance.

The casualties are higher than otherwise they would have been owing to the fact that the whole management of the factory, the lire brigade, and other helpers were fighting the fire in the adjoining building. A fire engine was blown to pieces. ' The works cover an area of five miles.

The roof of offices two miles from the scene of the explosion was ripped off, and buildings were damaged in every street of the little town.

Dr. F. E. Bolt (Lower Hutt) leaves England by the Port Townsville, with Mrs. Bolt, tomorrow, and will resume his practice on January 3. Dr. Bolt has been doing post-graduate work in London hospitals, and has also been to Germany. He found the British Medical Association Congress at Oxford of absorbing interest. *f ,
