NAVAL SECRETARY
APPOINTMENT CONFIRMED
,The Naval Defence Amendment Bill, introduced- into the House of. Representatives last- evening, confirms the appointment of a Naval Secretary in New Zealand and the establishment of the Naval' Board. :
The Naval Board has been in existence for some time, with the Naval Secretary1 as one of its members, but its existence has not been fully.recognised by law. The board is to consist of 'the' Minister of Defence, one or two executive ■ officers of the Royal Navy, and'the Naval Secretary. The functions of the board.are the general adminis- ; tration of naval defence.
There is also provision in the Bill for authorising the agreement made between the Minister and the Auckland' Harbour Board in relation to the naval base at Auckland. It provides for the naval authorities to take over and administer the Calliope Dock site as fhe naval base and to extend- the facilities.
The Bill-was read a first time.
