WELLINGTON SPRING MEETING

ARGENTIC SUCCESSFUL IN MAIN EVENT

(By "Rangatira.") Three victories by horses carrying the colours of Sir Charles Clifford and two successes by F\ W. Davis's team were features of the opening day of the Wellington Racing Club's Spring Meeting at Trentham yesterday. The Chokebore winners were Wild Chase, Trench Fight; and Counterblast, l}ut the stable's hottest favourite, Paper Slipper, was soundly beaten. Davis scored with Francis Drake, owned by Mr. F. Armstrong, and Plato, owned by Mr. T. H. Lowry. Form generally was a reliable guide, but Plato's win was a big surprise to the "majority. Although tlie brilliant sunshine of the previous days did not favour the opening of the meeting, the weather was fine and quite mild. There was a very satisfactory attendance for an off day, even if possibly not quite as large as some of the officials expected, and great interest was manifest in the new Julius .totalisator, .which is far superior to anything of its kind yet in the Dominion. There is strictly no comparison for the day's turnover of £26,879 10s, but on the Saturday last year, in showery weather, £21,745 was handled. The totalisator was closed sharp to time on all " 'events,.
