REVIEW IN GOVERNOR'S
SPEECH
(Received October 23, ,2.30 p.m.) SUVA, This Day. The Fiji Legislative Council, opened this morning. The Governor's Speech, revealed a surplus-for 1936 of £49,708, and an accrued surplus of £ 403,708* The estimated surplus for 1937 is £48,018.

The. Census figures were:—Fijians 97,651, Indians 85,002, others 7124; mixed? descent 4574, Europeans 4028; total, 198,379.
The imports of the colony for* eight months of 1936 amounted to £981,538 and the exports to £1,059,192.
The estimated crops for 1936/ are:—• Sugar 169,000 tons (a record), oananas maintain their position, copra. 30,000 tons. '..'.,... '
. An industry for the canning of pine* apples is ■to be inaugurated by. the Colonial Sugar Company.
