ESPERANTO CLUB

The weekly meeting of the Wellington Esperanto Club took place last Monday night. Mr. Vernon J. Leek presided. He announced that he ana Mr. Gordon Blong had won a joint prize of twenty-five gulden awarded by the Netherlands publication '.'Wij for greetings from the most distant country. This famous Dutch magazine had recently incorporated an Esperanto section to popularise its attractive features abroad. Mr. B. Potts stated that a report had been received from Mr. E. Hornblow, a member of the club at present touring Europe with his wife and lecturing hi the international language on the scenic attractions of New Zealand. Mr. Hornblow referred to his experience at the recent twenty-eighth World Congress of Esperantists in Vienna. Over 2000 Esperantists were present from forty different countries, the only language used being Esperanto. The outstanding feature of the congress was the smooth running of every phase. There was no language confusion. During the congress he had attended an Esperanto presentation of "White Horse Inn" in the largest theatre in Vienna—one of the most spectacular performances he had ever seen. At the conclusion of classes Miss Mildred M. Williams and Mrs. D. Burgess presented a sketch entitled "Neatendita"—an original playlet written in Esperanto by Miss Williams. Instead of the usual programme a letter-even-ing took place, the president reading postcards and letters of greeting from clubs and individual Esperantists in the Netherlands, Portugal, Czechoslovakia, Poland, France, Germany, Denmark, U.S.A., Sweden, and Finland.
