AWAPUNI GALLOPS

FINALS FOR TRENTHAM

(Special to the "Evening Post.")

PALMERSTON N., This Day.

Awapuni stables are strongly represented at Trentham and the horses that were galloped yesterday were sent along under conditions that could not have been better. The morning was delightfully fine and the course was in good order. The course proper was open, and the flags were over near .the outside fence. , Taumau and Lady Ina were sprinted six furlongs, and they were not required to do their best to complete in lmin 25 4-ssec.- ~ • Happy Hunting strode along easily until approaching the three, and she then speeded up to cover the rest pi the distance in 40 4-ssec. Bodyline cut out four furlongs in 56 2=ssec without being under pressure. Ingenuity required 56$ sec for the same distance. Finnesko and Nightrunner were companions over six furlongs, and they were going along easily -together at the post after tsking lmin 20 l-ssec. Finnesko appears to have lightened up a bit in the last two or three weeks. . . ■ ■ I Laughing Chief had The Crooner as a companion, in a three-furlong nut- < ter. The Crooner was slow to begin, I and Laughing Chief soon secured a three-length advantage. The Crooner,] however, was on terms as they turned for home, and Laughing Chief's advantage was very little at the post. The time was 39sec, so they were not loafing. Salt Spray, with Hinatori alongside, went quietly round to the seven furlongs mark, and, without any fuss, slid smoothly away, to maintain an even pace to the post, completing in lmin 38 3-ssec without being asked to give of his best. He was followed by Corroboree, who galloped very smoothly to do : five furlongs in lmin 6 l-ssec, after breaking 40sec for the first three. Severe's task was a similar one, and she took lmin 7 3-ssec. She began smartly enough, but she did not do more than "coast" down the straight. The most interesting gallop of the morning was that of Round Score arid Hunting Lodge. They were sent a mile. They began together, but Hunting . Lodge soon opened up a gap, and she led Round Score a merry dance for close on six furlongs. Round Score's time between the seven and the two was lmin 6 3-ssec, and when they swung into the straight he, headed Hunting Lodge and went on to. win comfortably by a couple of lengths, Hunting Lodge not being ridden right out. Round Score finished strongly, arid he pulled up well. Hunting Lodge's time for the last seven was lmin. 36sec, and it was not bad considering she was not required to do" her best after Round Score had headed her.' Round Score took lmin 35sec for the last seven." W. J.. Broughton will ride Round Score at Trentham, and J. Leach will be on Hunting Lodge. -. Mr. C. W. Boyd's Martarma—Tareheke gelding, Martara, which won the Maiden iStakes at Masterton last week, was outdoing easy exercise. Martara is to be prepared for the Great Northern Derby. ' L. Knapp has nothing in at Welling- j ton. but he is leaving for Cambridge | on Thursday with Padnos and Tangled. Miss Pango was to have made the trip, but she was knocked out a bit by the racing she had at Auckland. Padnos will be ridden byi Mr.' K. McK. Duncan, and W. J. McDowell will pilot Tangled. ■ '
