THE FINAL TRIALS

TRENTHAM GALLOPS

HUNTING CAT GOES WELL

(By "Rangatira.")

With most of the visiting horses now, on the scene, there was a lot of work at Trentham this morning, but most of it was half-mile sprinting and there were very few actual trials. The weather was like midsummer, very hot after the breakfast interval and without a breath of wind. The going on both the outside of the trial grass and on the plough was very fast, similar times being recorded on the two tracks. The outstanding efforts of the morning were those of Hunting Cat over a distance, of Ben Braggie, Paper Slipper, and Brazen King over half-miles, and of Francis Drake among the iwo-year-olds; but very few of the horses who worked yesterday were galloped fast, and others are not showing their paces away from their home quarters. ON THE GRASS. Moquette was first to gallop, slipping over half a mile in 49 3-ssec, rather to the surprise of her trainer. Sunee also pleased' his trainer in running 49sec, but he is still unlikely to meet his first day's engagement. Lofty, on the rein, was always going better than Spiral over five furlongs in lmin 4sec, the last half-mile in 51sec. It was a disappointing showing by Spiral. Lavina was kept in check over half a mile in 50 l-ssec, not breaking away early as she sometimes does. Entheos required 54sec. Hunting Cat and Master Brierly went a mile, always together, but Hunting Cat was on a loose, rein, whereas Master Brierly was kept up to his job. They traversed the distance in lmin 43sec, the- last half-mile in 51 3-ssec. If anything, Hunting Cat was a shade in front passing the post. Ben Braggie would not hold to the pace intended for him, and slipped over his half-mile in 48sec. Golden Ridge was not extended to record 53sec. Essex, who has developed into a shapely colt, ran half a mile nicely in SOsec. Plato,, looking. well after his spell, was a good two lengths ahead of Karl at the end of half a mile in 49sec. Red Manfred ran seven furlongs in lmin 31sec, the last half-mile in 52 4-ssec. ON THE PLOUGH. Papier Slipper was the first to gallop on the plough, and he ran half a mile smoothly in 48 3-ssec. Trench Fight took 50sec for the last half-mile of five furlongs. Korero and Might went the last halfmile of six furlongs in 53sec.' Gallio, keen to go faster,.was kept under control to-take 52 3-ssec for half a mile. Merry Lap finished half a length ahead of Nightlass at the end of seven furlongs in lmin 30 2-ssec, the last half-mile in 52sec, a useful effort for a jumper. Rustem ran half a mile in 49sec, and Sinking Fund moved nicely in recording 49 2-ssec. ■ . " • Grand Jury finished up two rounds of pacing by running half a mile in 49sec. He looks as bright as ever, and, judged by the way he pulled when pacing, he is very fit. t The best effort on this track went to Brazen King, who dashed over his halfmile in 48 3-ssec. Sardius ran the last three furlongs of his work in 41sec. . Other fresh horses noted out doing serviceable tasks were Brigadore,' Entail, Roaming, Aussie Ra, Calshot, Dorado, and Mittie. The only jumping done was a school over two fences by Sporting Song (C. McGovern) and i.ed Rufus (R. C. Miles), both fencing cleanly, with Red Rufus taking the honours. A number of two-year-olds came down the straight. The best trial was that in which Francis Drake, Geira, and Aiwai were associated, Francis Drake moving very pleasingly and having something in hand in just leading Geira home,"with Aiwai handy. Geira also went along well. Others to run down the track were Greenwich, Aureus, arid Nuclei, Card Player and Counterblast, Lazybones and Guinea Fowl, Happy Heels and Brunhilde (one furlong), and Money Raid (one long).F. W. Davis has not brought Mandamus or Birthday Party to the meeting, and others who have not made the' trip are Icing, Missal, Lord Moutoa, and Slippery. Additional scratchings yesterday were Toorak (3.55 p.m.) and Wild Career (6 p.m.).
