DEATH IN LONDON

Private cable advice received in Wellington from London announces the death of Dr. William Allan Chappie, M.D., Ch.B., M.R.C.S., D.P.H., who practised in Wellington thirty years ago, was a member of the. New Zealand Parliament, a member of the House of Commons, and,the author of several medical publications. The late Dr. Chappie was born at Alexandra, Central Otago, in 1864, his father being a land owner at Ophir. He received his primary education at the Alexandra School and studied medicine at the Otago University. He practised in Wellington from 1892 to 1906 and was an honorary physician to the Wellington Hospital. He was also a member of the Victoria College Council from its foundation until 1907, and was Captain-Surgeon of the Zealandia Rifles. He had a distinguished career as a surgeon; but turned his attention to politics and was elected to the House of Representatives by the Tuapeka constituency in June, 1908. ' He did not return to New Zealand politics after the dissolution of Parliament in October. of the same year, but 'went to England, where he was elected to the House of Commons from Stirlingshire as a' Liberal _in 1910 and represented. that constituency until 1918, holding a minor Cabinet position at one time. He was returned to the House of Commbns as member for Dumfriesshire in 1922 and finally retired from politics in 1924. Dr. Chappie returned to New Zealand about 'five years ago, but left again for London a year ago. He was married to Miss Sarah Douglas Turn-, bull, the only daughter of Mr. Thomas Turnbull, F.R.1.8.A.; of Wellington, and is survived by her and their four daughters, two of whom are at Hong Kong and two in.England.
