CUP TRIALS OR NOT?
The Weston handicap at Oamaru on Labour Day and the New Zealand Cup Trial Handicap at the Wellington Trotting Club's Meeting will see most of the New Zealand Cup horses m action, and although both races will be run over a mile and a quarter and are for 2min 45sec class horses, it is quite easy to understand why _ the champions do not appear in the list of nominations, says the "Press." Indianapolis had his race at Addmgton on Thursday, a proper test of speed over a mile and a half, but Harold Logan, who raced at New Brighton, might not have another out : ing until the day of the big race. Roi lOr, too, may be in need of a race, which he will not have before the Cup. In the New Zealand Cup Trial at Wellington a select band will parade, the number including Worthy Light, Evicus, De Soto, War Buoy, i Gamble, Blue Mountain, and Glenrossie. These horses alone would make a race worthy of the occasion, and with a good supporting programme the Wellington Club looks like holding a record meeting. Class is well represented in the principal events, and the minor races have all drawn good fields. It is some years since such good nominations have been received for a Wellington meeting, and apparently most of those nominated will face the starter. The programme, however, still lacks a really fast mile and a quarter which could be depended upon to attract the best class pacers, and the New Brighton, Wellington,- and Oamaru Trotting Clubs are all looking for numbers rather than quality in the races which are supposed to provide the final trials for ; the crack pacers. Unless something better is provided the clubs mentioned might in years to come find a charity meeting under the auspices of the Canterbury Owners' and Breeders' Association providing the trials for the New Zealand Cup.
