M.C.C. TEAM AT PERTH

HAMMONDf GREAT DISPLAY

PERTH, October 18,

Batting throughout the second day of the opening match of their Australian tour, against Western Australia, the M.C.C. team carried their overnight score of 91 for one wicket to the formidable total of 469 for four, Wyatt and Hammond scoring centuries. ~On the first day, Friday, Western Australia were dismissed for 142 runs and M.C.C. lost one wicket for 91 runs. ■ Continuing England's innings yesterday, Wyatt and Hammond Completed a second-wicket partnership of 221 runs. Hammond gave' an impressive exhibition, scoring 141 runs in 180 minutes. Once having passed the century, he discarded safe methods and hit two 6's, the first into the members' reserve, where the ball broke a window in the players' dressing-room. Hammond threw his wicket away, but was satisfied he had had sufficient practice. He gave chances when 81 and 129. His" timing throughout was superb, his driving on the off side being particularly fine. Wyatt, in contrast, was extremely dull, his painstaking innings for 106 runs occupying 282 minutes. He aimed to secure useful practice, and did not accept all opportunities to score except with an occasional crisp off drive, or a hefty pull. After tea, Hardstaff and Fishlock, a left-hander, were making their Australian debut as partners. Both had early escapes. Fishlock's. strong onside shots included a 6. Hardstaff, after early uncertainty, especially against the fast bowler Halcombe, settled down to play attractively, his driving through the covers being admired. Several times he lifted the ball to open spaces beyond the bowler. Worthington, who adopted • some of Hammond's methods, showed satisfactory form. Despite Wyatt's slowness, the team maintained a fast rate of scoring, and five 6's were hit. Halcombe was the unlucky bowler, having % several chances missed in the slips. The weather was sunny and the wicket in splendid order. Details:— WESTERN AUSTRALIA. First Innings .142 ENGLAND. First Innings.
