DESTRUCTION IN CALIFORNIA

SAN FRANCISCO, October 17.

A series of timber fires raged dangerously close to the San Francisco escort areas, destroying thousands of acres and causing the evacuation of Soulsbyville and Standard City and the outskirts of Winona. Other outbreaks occurred at Toulumne, Bolinas, and the Sierra National Forest. Several persons are missing.
