RUGBY DANCE

(From "The Post's" Representative.) The Hutt Rugby Football Club held its annual, dance and presentation of trophies in the- Horticultural Hall at Lower Hutt. The committee which organised the dance comprised Mi". Devine (.who fulfilled the duties'of M.C.), Mr. and Mrs. Marshall (the latter wearing gold lace), Mr." and Mrs. Feeney (black lace), Mr. and Mrs. Baker (peach' floral georgette), Mrs. Cooper (floral ninon), Mrs. Wilton (Lido blue georgette), and Miss Walker (royal blue satin). The trophies won by players during the past season were presented by Sir Alexander Roberts. The dancers included Mr. and Mrs. H. Skilton, Mr. and Mrs. J. Bradley, Mr. and Mrs. Doran, Mr. and Mrs, Mills; the Misses E. Lewis, M. Wickliam, B. McGurk, M. Carrisey, D. La Roche, B. Glover, J. Ashby, J. Routley, V. Calagoras, P. Grey, A. Walker, I. Gay, E. Westerby, L. C. Pettigrew, D. H. Rangiwhetu, D. Dunne, and E. Toner, Card Evening. The social committee of. the R.S.A. held a "500" evening in., their clubrooms, Lower Hutt. The committee, comprised Mesdames Wilton, Edwards, Robins, Mustard, Weggery, and Messrs. Barclay, Berry, arid Edwards. There was an excellent attendance, and the committee- hopes to promote further similar functions during the summer months. Amongst those present were Mr. and Mrs. Neilson, Mr. and Mrs. Ashton, Mr. and Mrs. S. Cooper, Mr. and Mrs. Garrett, Mr. and Mrs: Proebstal. Mr. and Mrs. Winslade, Mesdames Larson, Murray, Donkin, Warburton, Tanner, McIlraith, Cooper, Baillie, Ritchie, S. August, Astell, and Messrs. Robins, M. Hartigan; Hetherington, and P. McNicol. v Kindergarten Dance. The committee of the Free Kindergarten at Moera" held a successful dance in the local Community Hall. Committee members present were Mr. and Mrs. Baldwin (the latter "in navy marocain with touches of scarlet), Mr. and Mrs. Jamieson (black and silver), Mr. and Mrs. Campbell (wine marocain), Mrs. Poynter (figured georgette), Mrs. Stevens (rose and black), Mr. Sutherland, and Mr. Payes. Mr. Sutherland acted as M.C. The dkneers included Mrs v Coffee (who wore black and white sand crepe), Mrs. Purser (lavender georgette), Mrs.- W. Jones (pink and silver), Mrs. K. Sutherland (black net); the Misses N. Walsh (black and silver), M. Walsh (figured mariette), B. Fairclough (electric blue), J. Mills (brown georgette), T. Coffee (figured voile), A. Campbell (wine marocain), J. Baldwin (lemon marocain), E. Jeffries (pale green ninon), P. Fairclough (brown crepe satin), P. Creagh (spotted voile), G. Middleton (oyster satin), N. Coffee (black and red), E. O'Connor (white satin), A. Bell(blue georgette); and Messrs. M. Burns, J. and W. Martin, S. Clout, C. Kennedy, R Coffee, G. Jones, J. Smith, R. Brown, and A. Hall. Children's Parties. Two fanoy dress parties for children took place in the Hutt Valley over the weekend. The first was organised by i the Ladies' Auxiliary .of the Petone branch of the V.M.C.A... and was held in their hall in Cuba Street. Mrs. John Mitchell and Mrs. W. J. Hutchison judged the costumes, and the prizes were presented by It -s. H. W. Kersley. Mrs. J. W. Andrews, Mayoress of -Lower Hutt, was amongst the guests. ' . The children were entertained by Uncle Campbell of 2YA. Prizes were allotted to Noeline Hickey (Queen of Hearts), Hughie Mac Donald (Boy Mechanic), Connie Day (NellGwynn), Pat Bond (Baby), Douglas Bambery (Harry Lauder), Heather Elgie (Medieval Prince), Barbara Morgan (Peanuts), Jeannie Lefebre (Little Lamb), Margaret Parkes (Chips), Colin Swift (John Bull), and special prizes to . Kathleen Caldwell (Naughty Marietta), John Campbell" (Russian Cossack), and Brophy Bambery. (No More Strikes). Exhibitions of ballet tap-dancing and operatic dancing were given by pupils of Miss Peggy Hastings. l Mrs King (president of the auxiliary) presented bouquets to Mrs. Mitchell Mrs. Hutchison, and Mrs. Burns (a vice-president). Committee members who' assisted with the tea arrange-ments-included . Mesdames Garvitch, Lees Bell, Wilson, John, Silverwood, Nicholson, W. Miller, A. Miller, Porter, and Mis 3 Dick.

The second children's function was given by the teachers at the St. James's Sunday School for the pupils, and was held in the Parish Hall at Lower Hutt. The Rev. H. E. K. Fry welcomed the jmarry; chiMreii pn9 mothers who at-

tended, and Mrs. Fry presented the prizes, donated by herself and her husband, and by the teachers. The Rev. T. F. Fagg and Miss Humphries judged the costumes. The teachers who organised the entertainment were the Misses Innes, Y. and W. Vickery, Pilbrow, Barker, Forbes, Mr. and Mrs. Dawkins, Mr. Corbett, Mr. Noble, MrRoss, and Mr. Davis. Mr. G. L. Giesen and Mr. A. Ross aided in entertaining the children, and Mr. Dawkins was M.C. The programme included items by Maureen Jenkinson and Hazel Guise, and plays produced by Mrs. Hoggard and Miss Pilbrow. Mr. J. Martin was accompanist. Prize-winning costumes were worn by Prudence Dudding (white clock), Maurice Church (paper parcel), Olga Power (Maori), Bennie Field (Chinese), an "Alice in Wonderland" group, with special prizes to Diane Arnold (jockey), Cynthia Roe (Bournville cocoa), John Stanton (Robin Hood), and Peter Osborne (Tommy Atkins). Church Fair. The annual fair of St. Augustine's Church, Petone, was brought to a successful close after three days' duration. On the final afternoon the pupils of Miss Peggy Hastings contributed some dancing numbers —a solo operatic dance by Joan MacDougall, and a tap

ballet by Pat Lewis, Valma Sturgess, Kathleen Bales, Elaine Dorwood, Nola Fake, and Irene White. The fair concluded with a dance for young people at night, with Mr. Sherwood as M.C. The dancers included Mr. and Mrs. Bush (the latter, in black mariette), the Misses Ridler (black marocain), Trewern (pink crepe-georgette), Dwight (black and white georgette), Dwight (floral crepe), Daley (floral silk-voile), Tomkins (figured crepe), King (rose taffetas), Nelson (flowered organdie), Evans (white silk pique), Henderson (cherry satin and net), Flux (pink crepe de chine), G. Childs (blue mariette), M. Childs (floral satin), M. Hudson (blue floral crepe), and Messrs. Noble, Finlay, Gledhill, B. Valley, Knight, Hope, Evans, Parata, and Grey. A competition dance was won by Miss King and Mr. Finlay. Harriers' Dance. The annual dance, with presentation of trophies, of the Lower Hutt Harriers' Club, took place in the Horticultural Hall at Lower Hutt. The trophies were presented by the patron of the club, Mr. E. Hartley. The committee which arranged the dance comprised Messrs. M. Gough (secretary), V. Smith (captain), M. Patterson, H. W. Walker, K. Robbie, G. Clark, F. Dumble, T. Hurley, and G. A social evening, concert, and dance, organised by the social committee of the R.S.A., was held in their club rooms at Lower Hutt. Assisting, on the committee were Mr. and Mrs. Wilton (the latter in floral silk), Mr. and Mrs. Edwards (jade ripple-crepe), Mr. and Mrs. P. MacNicol (lemon crepe-satin), Mr. and Mrs. Annear ' (floral crepe dechine), Mrs. Robins (black lace over green), Mrs. Weggory (rose marocain), Mrs. Mustard (black and silver), Mrs. S. H. Ashton (black and floral mariette), Mrs. Page (white crepe de chine), Mr. Berry, and Mr. Whiteman. Concert items were alternated with the dances, for which Mr. R. Cowie was M.C. Vocal items were gives by Mesdames Potter and Steadman, and by Miss McKain, and Miss Joyce Webster and Master Bryce Glennie took part in an amusing sketch. Bryce Glennie also gave a further elocutionary number. Miss Heather Wright's tap-dancing and eccentric dancing, always much appreciated, was followed by pianoforte solos by Miss Conlon, and an instrumental number from Mr. Aplin. A farewell was accorded to Mrs. Burgess, a member of the ladies' committee, who is leaving shortly for a holiday trip to England.
