WOMAN'S RESEARCH WORK
It is rash to expect that'a child Vfhd is good at mathematics is likely to excel equally in arithmetic, algebra* and geometry. Research extending, oven a period of five years, involvirig 40QI children, and including also 'a . pre* liminary investigation of the opinion; of mathematics teachers all over England and Wales, with other tests, has brought Dr. Hilda Oldham, of Reading University, to the conclusion thafl many children will excel at one and! be poor at another, at any rate in early, stages of study. Obviously arithmetic, algebra, andi geometry have not a large enough common factor to justify their, being classed together as one group for school certificate and matriculation examinations, a point that Dr. Oldham made in. her lecture to the British .Assocjatioa recently, states the London "Daily Tele* graph."'
