WASHDYKE RACES

QUEEN DOROTHY AGAIN

(Special to the "Evening Post.") CHRISTCHURCH, October 17. The South Canterbury Meeting, held in. fine weather, provided some great racing. Win-and-place betting was resumed for the first time since the Spring Meeting three years ago, and the financial returns were highly satisfactory, the sum of £11,800 10s being handled, against £7946 10s last year. Chrysology set the pace most of the way in the Otaio Hurdles, with Vitaphone and Wexford Bridge in close attendance. Wexford Bridge ran to the front in the straight and won by a length. Chrysology came on again and stalled off Santoft by a head for second, with Vitaphone another- head away. Spearmarch went well for half the journey. Vitaphone pulled up very lame. Mutus, who was second favourite, galloped nearly three furlongs before the start of the Spring Stakes, and when the barrier rose he was left. Culotte showed her customary dash, leading out and never being caught. It was her first win, though she had been placed many times. Mutunga, a recent addition to M. B. Edwards s stable, finished strongly, after being well placed all the way, to get second place from Princess Ball, a Roydon mare who will improve. ' The order five furlongs from home in the Washdyke Trot was Rollalong, Linklight, Little Derby, Cruiser, and Bill B. There was not much change to the straight, Rollalong stalling oft Cruiser by a neck, with Bill B. a length further back, then Mary Aubert, Toorak, and Little Derby. The American colt Bill B. got into trouble more than once, but showed pace and finished well. ■ . ' EPRIS NOT A STAYER. Queen Dorothy was smartest out in the -Teschemaker Handicap, but after two furlongs she dropped back to third, behind The Surgeon and Tunneller, who led to the straight. Queen Dorothy then moved up on the rails to beat The Surgeon by a neck, Tunneller being a head away. Acla was three lengths back, then Tout le Monde. The last home was Epris, who. was well placed to the straight and then collapsed. He is not a stayer. Tunneller will be better for this outing. Joyous soon took the lead in the Tycho Hack Handicap, and held it to the end. winning by a length and a half. It was her best effort to date,, though she had shown speed in other races. Stratosphere, after jumping out well, ran into trouble and it was a very good performance that got him up to second place. Silver Lark was always well placed. Rousseau was unlucky at the start, and used up his speed to be fourth to the straight, where he faded out again. Patricia Holm soon established a lead of six lengths in the Kerrytown Hack Handicap, but after holding it to the straight, she collapsed. When the straight was reached Rebel Lad challenged Silver Slipper, and Braw Lad was moving up last. Rebel Lad beat Braw Lad by a neck, with Silver Slipper only a head away, and Heloise a moderate fourth. Rebel Lad had been back from ■ Sydney only a few days, and he is on the way to good form. Poniard disappointed. Kingussie, Linklight, Heather Queen, and Little Derby were the early leaders in the Hadlow Trot, with Colleen Wrack handy. Starwyn and Zincali went off slowly. Colleen Wrack wore

Heather Queen down in the straight, winning by a length. .Starwyn came home with a great run, three lengths back, just in front of Serene Bmgen, with Credit Balance, Kingussie, and Zincali next. Capital ran to the front a furlong from the post in the Flying Handicap, and, though tiring at the end, he hung on to beat Concertpitch. by a neck. Silver Sail being hall a length away. Invoice was two lengths back, then Guarantee and Wild Career next. McHeath was last, with Dollar Bill just in front of him. Concertpitch. ran a creditable race and it will do him good.
