VISITORS ARRIVING
WELLINGTON RACES
JOCKEYS' ENGAGEMENTS
(By "Rangatira.")
During the weekend there were quite a few arrivals at Trentham for the Wellington Racing Club's Spring Meeting opening on Thursday, but proceedings were quiet on the tracks this morning, when the weather was perfect. The plough was open, but no fast galloping was attempted, either by the visitors or by local horses. There will be plenty of galloping tomorrow morning, however, when the outside of the trial grass, which has been closed since last summer and is beautifully grassed at present, will be reopened. Nine horses arrived from the south yesterday morning. H. Cutts brought Wild Chase, Paper Slipper, Trench Fight, Guinea. Fowl, Card Player, Counterblast, and Lazybones, the last four two-year-olds, and C. C. McCarthy brought Argentic and Screamer. Impersonater, an acceptor for Thursday, has not come up with the Chokebore team. All these horses were on the track this morning and they look fit and well.. Screamer, a two-year-old grey colt by Hoylake from Toti dal Monte, dam also of Rebel Song and Silvox, bears a striking resemblance to his sire, and he is bred well enough to be a good colt. His only race to date has been in the John Grigg Stakes at Ashburton and he is to have his next run in the Wellesley Stakes. Several of the horses who were racing at Masterton, as well as a few others, were also out on the track. They included' Merry Lap and Elanage (C. Morse), Journet, Tiger Gain, and Caen (W. C. Griffith), Jolly (W.H.Dwyer). Sporting Song and Cute Melody (H. Dulieu), Nuclei (F. W. Ehrhorn), Rustem (V. Bryant). Golden. Ridge ■ (B. Goodman), Red Rufus and Mohua (G. W. B. Greene), and Werohia (W. McKinnon). The only work of note this morning was two schools. Sporting Song (C. McGovern\ went over, four hurdles well, and Verden, with his trainer in the saddle, was popped over five fences. Verden is to be schooled with Merry Lap tomorrow morning. Some of the acceptors for Thursday are already mentioned as non-starters or unlikely starters. Impersonater has not made the trip, and Sigurd and Galteemore, from T. R. George's stable, will not be runners. Free Gold, who was not doing too well last week, may also miss his first day's engagement. Counterblast will run in the Taita Handicap in preference to the Wellesley Stakes. Most of the riding of the Chokebore team will be doneby G. H. Humphries, whose first-day mounts will be Paper Slipper, Wild Chase, Card Player, Counterblast, and Trench Fight. Other riding engagements include:—L. J. Ellis, Hunting Cat, Lazybones, Elanage; S. Wilson, Korero, Cricket, Debham, Accomplice; C. Goulsbro', Sunee, Illyria; A. Messervy, Argentic, Screamer; C. T. Wilson, Knockfin, Tunneller; G. W. Duncan, Corowa; W. Rennie, Verden; R. W. Savage, Shy, Sea Wrack, Cute Melody; R. McTavish, Grand Jury; C. McGovern, Sporting Song; E. Peck, Spiral, Jolly, Missal, Moquette; L. Clifford, Might; R. E. Thompson, Merry Lap; and P. Burgess, Red Manfred, Calshot, Aussie Ra, Lord Moutoa, Happy Heels (probably). Wilson is without a ride in the Wellesley Stakes now that Sigurd is not to be a runner, and Peck's engagement for Jolly suggests that Icing may not contest the Wellesley. '
