WOOL IN GERMANY

SHORTAGE OF STOCKS

RESORT TO SYNTHETICS

(Received October 19,. I.' p.m.)

LONDON, October 18.

The Associated Press learns front Berlin that there is a serious shrinkage in German stocks of wool, owing .~t» the inability to export sufficient manufactures to obtain foreign exchanged* pay for imports. •, '/ This position is disclosed, in the German Wool Trade Association's statistics. Stocks of combed materials, chiefly crossbreds, are ~ held by five German combing works, and these j stocks have decreased during September from 4,508,000,0001b to 4,028,000,000 lb, as compared with 10,263,000,0001b held during September, 1935. ,',. Scoured wool held by ten German scouring works has decreased during September from . 4,503,000,0001b to 4,244,000,0001b, . compared with 8,226,000,0001b held in September, 1935, The fall is chiefly in 2,125,000,0001b of crossbreds. It is problematical Whether Germany will be able to replenish stocks under the present circumstances, but five large cellulose-wool ■ factories which are at the point of starting will manufacture synthetic wool and cotton. They have recently began operating with a sixth building at Seigburg. *

They aim at an output of '80,000 tons of cellulose-wool yearly by-the erid-of 1937, which would be enough in an emergency to cover half of Germany's needs of natural wool.
