STARHEMBERG V. FEY

CHALLENGE TO DUEL

STRUGGLE FOR LEADERSHIP

VIENNA, October 8.

Major Fey, who is' at present engaged in a struggle with Prince Starhemberg as to who shall lead the Heimwehr, has challenged the Prince to a duel, owing to alleged remarks by Prince Starhemberg about Major Fey's "unexplained conduct" on the occasion of the murder of Dr. Dollfuss. Major Fey has already referred the alleged remarks to an officers' court of honour, which will also decide regarding the duel, as duelling is illegal in Austria.

• A cable published on ■ October 5 stated that the struggle between Prince Starhemberg and Major Fey for control of the Heimwehr was marked by dramatic moves. First of all a partial conference of the party expelled the Prince from the leadership, but then his supporters, at a larger conference, dismissed Major Fey. The latter conferred with the Chancellor (Dr. Schuschnigg), who forbade newspapers to publish Prince Starhemberg's communiques. Major Fey has now proclaimed himself supreme leader of the Vienna Heimwehr, and declares he will fight the Prince at the end.
