TROUBLE ON MATAI
CARRYING OF STORES
NINE MEN GIVE NOTICE

AUCKLAND, October 8.
Six stewards and three cooks employed oti the Government lighthouse steamer Matai tonight gave the master of the vessel; Captain Burgess; 24----hours' notice of their leaving the ship. The men's decision was a sequel to their refusal to carry stores on board in the afternoon. The captain refused to comment on the matter tonight,' but the men alleged that the captain was . adamant that they would have to carry sacks of potatoes on board, each sack weighing 2cwt. The men claimed that in the cooks' and stewards' award it was provided that members of the union should not carry/stores weighing over 701b.
