Chamber of Commerce Ball. Mr. R. H. Nimmo (chairman of the ball sub-committee of the Chamber of Commerce) has written to the secretary of the Wellington Red Cross Society conveying thanks and appreciation of his committee to the society for the work done in carrying out the decorative scheme in connection with the recent ball. So delighted were Viscount and the Viscountess Elibank with the decorations and lighting effect as a whole that they requested the Convener to be presented to them. Many of the delegates next morning called at the Town Hall to express their admiration and thanks, two cf whom said they had travelled widely but had seen nothing to surpass the harmonious effect achieved by the decorators. The convener (Mrs. Dennis-ioun-Wood) wished to thank Major Porteous specially for his assistance in the lighting scheme which was carried out so successfully. Party for V.A.D. , An enjoyable evening was spent at the Red Cross rooms recently when a social was held by the Red Cross ;V.A.D.s in honour of one of their members, Miss Venus Darragh, whose marriage is soon to take place. Amusing games and competitions were indulged in, and musical and elocutionary items were given by Miss Evelyn Stowers, Miss Averill Nicholl, and Miss Pragnell. During the supper Miss Darragh was presented with an ornamental Vase and flower jug, a gift from the V;AVD.s. Among those present were Sister Watson, Sister Mundy, Miss Darragh, Miss England, Miss Robertshaw, Miss Wiffin, Miss Nicholl, Mrs. Jenkins, TVliss Fair, Mrs. Atkinson,, Miss Bell, Miss. Piragnell, Miss Cooper, Miss E. Beaumont. Miss E. Stowers, Miss D. Truscott, Miss P. Orr, Miss j£ Jewiss, Miss Zo'e Hale. New Zealand School Journal. The: compiler .of 'the October, [number of the New Zealand School Journal has allowed his ideas for the edification of the young people to'take'a fanciful turn, and most of the matter is from stories of the past which deal with mythical people. It is all good and amusing. '.'Pilgrim's Progress" has been utilised to show how a promise will certainly be fulfilled if faith is brought into action. "King's Treasuries" provides another good story, the "Well-behaved Witch" another. Each has an amusing little application which could be useful if needed. The "Story of Lord Rutherford" is well presented by Professor Coleridge Farr, F.R.S., and should act as an inspiration to the ambitious ones. There are other good stories and some well-chosen poetry. The, little ones are well catered for, as usual. / The Children's Players. ■ - The first production of the enilaren's Players will take place in . the Blue Triangle; Hall, Boulcott Street, Wellington, tomorrow, and on Saturday, October 17, at 2.30 p.m.; .. Three one-act plays will be given. : A performance in the Hutt Valley at a later date is under consideration. r7
