With the opening day of the V.A.T.C. Spring Meeting at Caulfleld and the concluding day of the A.J.C. Spung will be the S.A.J.C. fixture a.which the South Australian Derby, for which the Dominion-bred Limond Lad and Palustris are the most fancied pair, will beThrprlncipal event at Cauifield tomorrow will be the' Caulfisld Guineas. £2000, in which Prince Quex remains the only Dominion candidate. Cuddle will run in the Caulfield Stakes, £1000, 9 furlongs, and other important utemb are the Toorak Handicap, £1000, 1 mile, and the Debutant Stakes (tor colts and geldings) and the Debutante Stakes (for fillies), each carrying a prize of £1000 and run over 4 furlongs. The remaining two races are the Herbert Power Handicap, £500, 11.furlongs, and the Oby Hurdles, £500, 2 miles and 65 yards. „ . . It was not till Ammon Ra scored in 1931 that the Dominion enjoyed its first success in the Caulfield Guineas. Three years later Theo, also won. Neither of these horses, however, was owned at the time in New Zealand. There was no Dominion representation last year, when -Young Idea succeeded. Epigram's dead heat with Journal in the Toorak Handicap was New Zealand's only success on the opening day of last year's meeting. Synagogue, a hot favourite, was beaten into fourth in the" Caulfield Stakes, a race in which only Dominion success yet was recorded by The Hawk in 1924. .-'-,....■:
At Randwick tomorrow's main race will be the Randwick Plate, £1000,: w.f.a.,' 2 miles. The Final Handicap, 1£ miles, is worth" £750. and all other four events, the Canonbury Stakes, for two-year-olds, 5 furlongs, the Waverley Handicap, 1£ miles, the Chester Handicap, 6 furlongs, and the Clibborn Stakes, for three-year-olds, 1 mile, are worth £650. each. Silver Ring will not have Gay Blonde to oppose him in the Randwick Plate, so he will not have the chance to avenge Wednesday's defeat. No New Zealanders were in the money on this day at last year's meet<ing, but Golden Promise, King March, and Nightly were winners two years ago.
