HEALTH CAMPS
LOCAL CAMPAIGN
SALE OF HEALTH STAMPS
The inaugural meeting of the 1936 Health Stamp Campaign Committee was held yesterday afternoon at the Town Hall. .
Councillor M. F. .Luckie, who presided in the absence of the Mayor, said that the object of the meeting was to make preliminary arrangements for the raising of funds by the sale of health stamps and otherwise for. the support of the children's health camp movement' in the next twelve months. Last year as a result of the excellent work of committees it had been possible to give in the Otaki Health. Camp six weeks' treatment to 614 children. Similar camps had been established in other centres and all were dependent on the sale of health stamps and donations for their maintenarice.
Mr. P. E, Pattrick, Mr. J. I. Goldsmith, Captain Galloway, Dr. H. E. Gibbs, and Mr. F. W. Matthews, all of whom took a leading part in last year's campaign, spoke of the benefits derived by the children who had attended the health camps, and urged the importance of sustained effort during the coming campaign in order that the maximum number of children might benefit.
Mr. C. O. Coad, organising secretary, said that the outstanding success of the campaign last year, when approximately £2400 was raised in the Wellington district, was due to the splendid work of the sub-committees, the great prominence given to the movement in the columns of the Press, and the hearty support of the general public. The co-operatio.n of the busijness community in purchasing health stamps for use in their everyday correspondence was a material feature in the success of the_ campaign. Fresh air, good food, and sunshine treatment for six weeks had beenmade possible for many children by the generosity of Wellington business houses, said Mr. Coad. Business men would be pleased to know that through their last year's help many children who were rundown and delicate were now on the high road to health, and were likely to become valuable assets to the community. Sub-committees would soon be engaged in their plans for this year's campaign, and the public would be able to purchase health stamps from November 2 onwards.
Mr. J. I. Goldsmith was elected to represent the . Wellington local area committee on the Wellington district executive. B
