SMOKE OVER LONDON
To the task of using the sun's rays for motive power, of getting gold from sea water, and of using the tides in hydro-electric plants has now been added that of getting hold of the 1000 tons of sulphuric acid which are daily let loose in the air over London. The subject was suggested at therecent conference of the National Smoke Abatement Society at Bristol. The president.. Dr. Hi A. des Voeux, said in his presidential address: "We have for 600 years or more been^ clustering like sardines in ar' tin' under the smoke pall of our enlightened cities and admiring our superiority over primitive man, yet we have : not yet solved the smoke problem. The English are a slow people. A comprehensive survay should be made of the causes of atmospheric, pollution. There is a daily liberation of the equivalent of over 1000 tons of sulphuric acid into the atmosphere of London. The damage . suffered by the community probably amounts to not less.than ;£1 per annum per head of the urban population."
