WEIGHT-LIFTING

WELLINGTON FEATS

At the Kelvin School of Physical Culture, Wellington, last week an interesting • exhibition of some weightlifting was given by the pupils of Kenneth J. Webb, the well-known Wellington physical culturist and weightlifting instructor. After a short address by Mr. Webb, on the benefits which are to be derived from following the popular sport, the lifting commenced in real earnest and J.1 Cooper set the ball rolling by beating the two-arm curl record of 921bs and 'establishing a new .record' of, lOQfllbs. The next item on the programme'was an attack by,the same lifter on the pullover and press; in wrestler's bridge record which stood at 1401bs. He succeeded in eclipsing this record by no' fewer than 24£lbs. Cooper then attempted to better the Australian two-hand dead lift record.of 3501bs and was successful in setting up a new figure of 363}lbs. . An exhibition of the Olympic Set was then given by F. Kidd, Wellington's promising middleweight lifter, and although his .lifts of 1501bs in the military press, 1301bs in the two hands snatch, and 1801bs clean and jerk are not up to the best New Zealand standard, his style shows great, improvement in the last two months.' Shouldhe strike a patch of good form he will almost be sure to represent Wellington \in the • middleweight division at the forthcoming New Zealand championships in December.

. In' the heavyweight division, L. Woolcott was successful in'establishing a' New Zealand record in the rectangular fix, with a fine lift of 109J1K

This performance \yas followed by the breaking of the right-arm curl record of 601b with a lift of 66Jlb, and the establishing of the left-arm curl record of 62Jlb. This young lifter, only 19 years of age,, excels on "curl" lifts, for immediately after setting up these figures he:was successful in breaking the New Zealand two-arm curl record of 1271b by lifting 1281b.

Prior to the beginning of the programme, W. G. Walker was'successful in performing a thigh curl of 1601b. For this feat he will receive the New Zealand Weightlifters' Association's certificate of merit, which is granted to any one of its members performing dn outstanding feat of strength. It is very pleasing to see this fine amateur' sport progressing. The principal oi the Kelvin School acted in the capacity of official N.Z.W-L.A. referee for the evening.
