NOTIUM FOR NORTH
FRIESLAND WORKING WELL
(Special from "Limited.")
HAWERA, October 6,
The near approach of meetings was indicated in. the 'increased activity on the Hawera. tracks' during the weekend, several .interesting gallops being performed. ■. , J. Brown leaves for Ellerslie with Notium tomorrow night. Notium is particularly well and should run on more solidy than he did at Wanganui. He races well at Ellerslie, and, as Karl is not an acceptor in the Shorts Handicap, ■P. Atkins will in all probability ride him.- '.■■■■• That there is very little wrong with him Friesland demonstrated on: Saturday morning when, having his first gallop since resuming work, he easily held ' Lowenberg over three furlongs on the outside of the.course, proper, with the pegs but 40 feet, in 40 3-5 sec. Friesland has been nominated for the Stewards' Handicap at Riccarton next month and.will- have: to be considered'as a likely-one to seethe hard six furlongs out- to-,the end in good style. . , Lowenberg 'is making steady progress in his New Zealand Cup preparation, doing, long pace work and short sprinting. . F. Ehrhorn's two-yearrold filly Nuclei and Corowa are the only Hawera en : trants for the Wellington Club's Spring Meeting, but a large number are .being prepared for the Waverley Meeting. Nuclei has just recovered from a severe cold and is not as forward as she otherwise would be. On Saturday, however, she ' finished ' within a length of the year-older Student-Prince at the end of three furlongs in 41sec.
, Since resuming work Silyahus has done well and has been going in something like her old form. She'showed up attractively on Saturdiay ,by carrying a big weight and sprinting three furlongs in 39 l-ssec, which was the best sprint of the morning, v. Looking all the better for his outing at Martbn,: Mr,;F.:-::Walker's: Siegfried —Rapt colt Fafner; sprinted' three furlongs down the back iii 40sec. .The Gay Lothario filly Gay Step, in O. Cox's stable; is: shaping a' bit better in her track efforts and she galloped half a mile in 52:2-ssec, going fast over the first'quarter.; ;;, ; Tom Fryer's maiden >Kia>Qra has gone on the right way-, since, racing at Foxtoh'aihd is holding her condition better than formerly. From a standing start she covered three furlongs in 40 3-5. sec. She-is one. Of the centre's maidens likely to win her way out of that class early. .; .., • ■ .-.■ '. '•,- .'': .■■■■;.••■ .:
:■■ Corowa nevejf looked as well as- .at present and Trentham racegoers will see a definitely-improved horse at the Wellington Kacing Club's Meeting., The race he had at Marton has sharpened him up a lot and-he promises to strip a fit horse. .-..•: y-;..i.
Interest will attach to the next appearance of J. Brown's three-year-old Kia Tere, who is doing well in his track work. Present intentions are to race him at Waverley on Labour Day. Brown's stable willalso be represented by Notium and Student Prince. " • A neat-looking two-year-old colt by Resinous from Camp bird, by Campflre from Whioi, is a recent addition to T. Fryer's team. Campbird'was the dam etirlier of Taitoru, a useful performer.
