READY RESPONSE
WHEN HELP NEEDED
UNEMPLOYED VOLUNTEER
Though many of them had had no regular work for a long period there was a unanimous response from unemployed men on Saturday when a request was made for volunteers to perform a work of charity. The Wellington office of the State Placement Service was asked if it could supply six volunteers for the purpose of wheeling a large quantity of stones from one part of a section in Bolton Street to a gully on the section. The property was recently purchased by the Leper Sisters, who intend building a rest home f the heroic women who have volunteered for service on the leper island of Makogai, in the Fiji Group. There were .iiore than fifty unemployed men in the office when a notice of the call was displayed, and these men, who were naturally in need of many necessities, saw the greater need of the sisters for workers who would give their services freely, and that consideration was first in their minds.
From the volunteers six sturdy men were selected, and they worked with a will throughout the whole of Saturday morning. Wheelbarrows had been lent by the City Engineer's staff, and when their heavy task was completed tl ; men were provided with dinner by a local hotel proprietor.
