HOUSING PROBLEM
FARM LABOUR SHORTAGE
(Special to the "Evening Post.-)
NEW PLYMOUTH, This Day
"The Government should give immediate attention to the housing problem in the country. It is more pressing than in the cities," declared the president, Mr. W. A. Sheat, at a meeting of the South Taranaki Farmers' Union. General agreement was expressed with Mr. Sheafs contention, but it was decided to defer representations till replies were received to a questionnaire on the closely-related farm labour question which ,the executive is sending to farmers of the district.
One factor in the labour shortage, said Mr. R. D. Dagg, was that married men were being driven to the cities through lack of accommodation, on farms. The cause of the shortage was not so much unsatisfactory living quarters but the absence of quarters for married men.
Mr. S. Bayliss: If a young man -takes up farm work he is practically condemning himself to single blessedness.
