CLASS EXTREMES
GAY TALKIE AT PAEROA
(Special from "Early Bird.")
AUCKLAND, October 2. English Night, who showed some pace in the bracelet event at the Pakuranga Meeting six weeks ago, is to be given his first, run among the hacks in the Novice Handicap at Paeroa on Monday. He is green yet, so may benefit by the outing. _ Gay Talkie is in two races. at Paeroa on Monday, the Trial Handicap and the main event, which represent the two extremes from the point of view of class. He will get some weight in the minor contest, but if reserved for the President's Handicap he would receive some support, for he is a very promising three^-year-old. . , Another horse of this age that should have a successful season is Gay Streak, who was in the hack plates at Avondale and on' the second day went a very fine race. He is still a bit restless at the barrier, but once he gets over this he should soon win again. A feature of his races as a two-year-old was a strong finishing run and this should stand to him < over a middle distance. Thespis may make his reappearance at Paeroa on Monday, for he was entered in both jumping races on that day only. He cannot get off lightly in the matter of weight and this may bother him if he is started. The steeplechase contest should not be very difficult to win, and as the distance is increased to three miles on Monday he must be very forward to be entered for that alone. He is also in the second day's steeplechase at Ellerslie a fortnight later. ' Philemup's Avondale form was first class, being a big improvement on his Wanganui efforts, his showings giving some indication of the brilliancy of The Buzzer, who defeated him pointlessry on the first day at the southern meeting. Philemup defeated a big field of maidens the first day at Avondale and with a share of luck in.thp running on the second day he would have won again. He is in the hack seven furlongs at Paeroa on Monday, and if produced, will take some beating, j
.. -The-two-year-old ■ Bowyang -is going along-'nicely-for Jiis Welcome;. Stakes, engagement:next week and he is ap■parently mafeirig further' improvement. He-was- 'doingrWell in his: preparation a few;,weeks' ago, where he'had'a change df- stables and a let-up; so'he may be susceptible to. ; greater, progress than the' three that finished In front- of him in the Avondale Stakes. He looks lilte playing -; a part in the', juvenile classic at'Ellerslie next .Saturday, this event 'promising •'well' as a contest,.! with: such 'others as; Aiwai;, Girl ..Pat;' Icing,' and Francis Drake:participating. c Flood Tide may need a. race,; but there -was no denying that he looked a-.ver'y fit horse-when brought to- El-1 lerslie to gallop this week. Providing he goes on the;-right, way. he' should make a name.:for himself.this season, even if his racing is to be confined within the limits of the city courses. However, with stakes increasing solidly round-the country circuit, his owner may be induced to get:away from the city complex. It will be recalled that Kiltowyn in all his successful career, barring the last . ;New Zealand Cup Meeting, never raced anywhere except at Ellerslie and Avondale. The dash displayed by Kelly in the open sprint on the second day at: Avondale must have really startled his connections, for a hundred yards from the post he looked a winner, failing then to survive :Triune'S: late- challenge: It was a case of a seasoned horse carrying too many guiis. Kelly may be kept to short etwees in the near future. -He revealed such brilliancy last week; that'it is possible he will, return to his best form this season; and if he does he will win some go.pd handicaps later
on. • .. '•'■•'. . The principar -handicap event at Paeroa on Monday is going to provide Tradesman;; with- another opportunity of winning over aVmiddle distance, for the eight and a half furlongs on this course has often been won by horses with speed only. So no matter .how Tradesman fared in this, afternoon's Taumarunui Cup, his big chance looks to be on Monday. One of his most dangerous opponents may be a fresh horse in Sinking Fund, who had a race at Avondale and now should be just about right for this handicap. Then there is King Musk to be considered, for, like Sinking Fund, he was entered only for the second day's handicap, and after his fine second to Lagoon at Avondale last week it seems as if his winning turn may not be .far off. This trio promise to make it most interesting for the other runners on Monday.
