FINE AT FIRST
LESS SETTLED TOMORROW
Special forecast for Wellington:—
Light to moderate but increasing northeasterly to northerly winds. Weather fine and mild, but becom-
ing less settled tomorrow
The general forecast for the Dominion as a whole issued at noon today is for easterly to north-easterly winds over the northern half of the North Island, and for north-easterlies to northerlies elsewhere. Winds will be strong in the Auckland Province and will reach gale force in places, but will be decreasing later. Elsewhere they will be light to moderate, but freshening in and south of Cook Strait. A change to southerlies in the southern half of the South Island is probable within the next twenty-four hours. The weather will still be dull and misty with further rain in. the Auckland Province, but it will be improving there temporarily. Elsewhere it will be fine at first, but unsettled conditions with rain will shortly be setting in over the western and southern districts of the South Island and will be gradually extending northwards. Temperatures will continue mild.
The cyclone centred between Norfolk Island and Cape Maria Van Diemen has moved slowly eastward. It has been responsible for strong northeasterly or easterly winds and for dull and misty weather, with rain in the northern and eastern portions of the North Island. Misty, and in places foggy, conditions, with a few isolated showers, have prevailed in coastal areas in the southern half of the South Island, but elsewhere the weather has been fair and temperatures have been mild everywhere, northerly winds predominating. Since last night barometers have fallen steadily in the south owing to the advance from across the .Tasman Sea of a rather intense westerly depression. Although still high, pressure to the east of the Dominion has commenced to fall also.
• Auckland has had a continuance of dull and threatening weather, with a fresh to strong north-easterly wind. Light rain totalling seven points fell there yesterday afternoon.
Wellington had a warm and pleasant spring day with a light north-westerly wind. The maximum temperature rosa to 65 degrees, and 11.2 hours of bright sunshine were recorded.
The fog in Christchurch yesterday morning disappeared by 11 a.m., and the rest of the day was fine and sunny with a north-easterly breeze. At 9 a.m. today it was cloudy and misty with an easterly breeze.
Dunedin had a cloudy morning and a sunny afternoon, the wind being a light north-easterly. It was still clear there this morning.
