CAREFREE MATCH
WELLINGTON BEATEN
SOUTHLAND'S SECOND HALF
(Bj' Telegraph.—Press Association.)
INVERCARGILL, Sept. 23. '
The Southland Rugby team defeated Wellington by 37 points to 23 in a fast game played in fine weather at Rugby Park today. The match was played in a carefree spirit, with more attenliftn paid to scoring points than preventing them. Wellington dominated the first half and led at half-time by 12 to 8, but tired badly early in the second half, and Southland had things much its own way. Fourteen of Wellington's points were scored by Lamason's good kicking. : , The Wellington forwards played a dashing game in the first half, beating Southland in all departments, but the home pack lasted better. The backs were well matched, Wellington's advantage near the scrum, where Tindill played a# splendid game, being offset by the menace of Mitchell, who was outstanding as centre-three-quarter for Southland. He scored two brilliant tries, one from inside his own half. The game began sensationally, eight points being scored in the first four minutes. Lamason kicked a penalty goal,, and Southland immediately scored and converted a try. Lamason kicked another penalty, but after only 15 minutes' play Southland drew ahead with a great try by Milne, after Sharp, the full-back, made a splendid opening. Lamason put his side one point ahead by kicking his third penalty goal, and for a time it appeared that Wellington was the better team, all round. Just before half-time Tindill made a y/eat run and Upchurch scored in Uie corner. The second half kept the crowd on its feet, scoring movements being frequent and ■ spectacular. Southland rapidly took the lead, and although Wellington continued to add to its score the visitors seemed tired and did not look like winners. For Southland, Mitchell (two), Milne, Sutherland, Parker, and Metcajfe scored1 tries in the second half, Purdue converting two and Mattingly converting two and kicking a penalty goal. Wellington's eleven points were scored by Baldwin (try), Kenny (try), and Lamason (conversion and penalty).
