COMPOSERS AND LYRISTS

The New Zealand Composers' and Lyrists' Club celebrated the anniversary of the founding of their club with a recital of New Zealand songs and music in the Fabian Club rooms,' Auckland. There was a large attendance of members and friends, who warmly appreciated the items, all of which were excellently rendered, and showed » high standard of local talent. A special feature which was very much appreciated was the, production by the winner. Miss Lillian Braithwaite, L.R.S.M., and her pupils of the prize play in the competition held by the club for the best play written about the song, "In a Spanish Garden." , . A particularly interesting character sketch entitled "Early Days and Early Ways" was presented by Miss Mamie Spicer, great-great-grandchild of Mrs. Spicer, whom she introduced as the first English child born in New Zealand, and displayed charming old dresses worn by her great-great-grand* mother in the' eighteenth century. The presentation of the one-act play prize trophy and supper concluded a very enjoyable evening. .
