SAFETY OF CHILDREN

PARENTS PROTEST

PORIRUA DEVIATION

Protests were made at a meeting of householders and parents at Porirua on Thursday, regarding the proposed deviation and ramp for the main; highway, and the following resolution, moved by Mr. E. Windley and seconded by Mr. F. Cocker, was carried unanimously:— "That this meeting of parents of children attending the Porirua Public School views with grave concern the proposal to deviate .the motor traffic using the main west highway past the school, for the following reasons: That the school has been on its present site for the past fifty years, and has enjoyed comparative freedom from the dangers of motor traffic; as residents of Porirua we ask the Minister of Transport to regard the proposal from the point of view of the safety of the children; that parents consider that they have strong grounds for objection because the proposal, while preserving the lives of motorists, will at the same time seriously endanger the lives of the children; that this meeting appreciates the efforts of the Minister of Transport to reduce the number of deaths on the roads of the Dominion, and respectfully, asks him to abandon this route and thereby removs the danger to the children; and that the Minister of Transport be invited out to inspect the proposed route."
