A "CLOSE SHAVE"

Evidence that a motor-car and a transport lorry brushed so close to each other without hitting, on the Paremata road, that two ropes holding down the lorry load were cut by the passing car, was given in the Magistrate's Court today when Roy Thomas Haddon, a commercial traveller and the car driver, was charged before Mr. W. F. Stilwell. S.M., with travelling in a manner which might have been dangerous to the public. . Raymond Hodson, transport lorrydriver, . gave evidence that at 3 p.m. on August 7 he was rounding a sharp bend on ■ the Paremata-Pahautanui road, on his correct side, when a car shot round the corner at 30 to 35 miles per hour, one wheel being over the white line. The car. brushed so close that it cut two of the ropes holding down the load. The lorry was not damaged. The car did not stop. , Adolphus Rzepecky gave corroborative evidence. Constable Satherley said that he had examined the defendant's car and had found no evidence that the car had actually touched the lorry in passing. The defendant gave evidenec that he was hugging the bank and not travelling at more than 30 miles per hour. He said that the lorry was over the white centre line. He had stopped after turning the corner, but finding the car undamaged had driven on. Holding that the defendant on his own admission had rounded a sharp bend at too high a speed, Mr. Stilwell imposed a fine of £2 and costs (£2 12s Bd).
