MR. J.H. OWEN

Mr. John Hart;-Owen died at his, home in Seatoun on Sunday, at the age of 76 years: For many months prior to his death he had not been in the best of health. Born in Liverpool in 1860, the late Mr. Owen was educated at■ the Bala Grammar School, in Wales. Commencing his career as an apprentice to a Liverpool firm in 1877, he rose to the position of export- manager-of another firm in Bristol by 1882. A few years later he came to New Zealand, and at Auckland in 1888 he joined the firm of Sharland and Cfc., Ltd., wholesale druggists, as a traveller. For many years he travelled the Bay of Plenty and East Coast districts by coach and on horseback.. Mr. Owen's rise in New Zealand was as steady as it had been in England, and in 1890 he was appointed manager of Sharland's in Wellington. Nine years later he took over the general managership for New Zealand, and he retained . that position until he retired- in 1912. From that time he was a member of the board of directors. ■ - ■

The late Mr. Owen was a man of many activities, the principal of which was radio, both on its technical and its entertainment sides. From the very early days of broadcasting in New Zealand he took a keen interest in all its aspects; an interest he maintained untQ the time of his death. Some years ago he made a trip to England and Canada, where he looked closely into broadcasting methods. He was the chairman of the Advisory Council set up under the Broadcasting Act, 1931, land he was always, interested in the iarfists brought to the Dominion from ■time to time by the Broadcasting 'Board. :

His other hobbies included billiards, in which he excelled, singing, in which art he attained some distinction, and photography. In .Seatoun the Anglican Church and the Boy Scouts owed much to his generous support. Mr. Owen also belonged to the Wellington Club, the Seatoun Bowling Club, and the Commercial Travellers" Association, and he was a vice-president of the Seatoun Football Club.

The late Mr. Owen is survived by his widow and a son.
