NEW YORK, September 12.
! The State election campaign i» Maine, which will culminate on Monday when 300,000 voters are expected to go to the polls, reached its peak to- : night with an address at Portland by i the Republican Presidential candidate, Mr. A. M. Landon. Mr. Landon made the strongest and most vigorous attack by a Republican nominee yet made on the New Deal, and covered the alleged international, as well as national mistakes of the Roosevelt Administration. On the domestic side Mr. Landon contended that the N.K.A., the A.A.A* and other New Peal agencies comprised a planned economy which was incompatible with a Democratic Government, and on foreign policy he alleged that Mr. Roosevelt had failed to seize a great opportunity to lead' the way to world peace and economic security when he "turned his back" on the London Economic Conference, and a chance to turn the world trend from economic nationalism and war was lost. "AS GOES MAINE." Although no national issues are involved in the Maine elections, for a . historial reason they are of tremendous psychological importance, since it is the only State holding elections in advance of the national elections. The proverb has arisen "As goes Maine so goes the nation;", although this often has not been the case. The Governor and three Congressmen will be elected. The Republicans are considered to be the likely victors, the Democrats trying to minimise the majorities in an attempt to counteract the Republican trend. The Democrats have revealed that some dozen wealthy individuals, including several members of the Dupont and Rockefeller families, have donated more than 50,000 dollars for the Republican campaign, although none of the donors is resident in the State of' Maine. The legend of Maine ("As Maine goes in September so goes the Union in November") is1 deep rooted in American politics, though it was recently demonstrated to be far from true. But in 1932 Maine presaged the victory of President Roosevelt with a record vote in the electoral college ;by its' return of a Democrat Governor for the first time in 50 years'and by going Democrat for the first time in 18 years. The only important office won by t a Republican in 1932 was that of representative in Congress for the First District.
