NEW ZEALANDER.

POSTS FOR NEW ZEALANDERS

(To the Editor.) Sir, —Your correspondent "Give New Zcalanders a Chance" forestalled me to some extent, for my thoughts had j been wandering in the same direction. There is good reason to feel that nativeborn New Zealanders are not taking I their rightful stand as far as conducting the affairs of their own country is concerned. For many years it was inevitable that the Government would be in the hands of those who made this the country of their adoption, and among these pioneers were many famous administrators. Then a time arrived when New Zealanders came to the fore and proved themselves capable of following in the footsteps of these illustrious pioneers, but for some reason they now seem to have allowed themselves to be pushed into the background.

While I do not wish to cast any reflection on those in power, it is significant that we are now taking a back scat. When we view the tendency of our most brilliant sons to seek their careers in other countries, it is a sign that we do not properly appreciate them here, where they are badly needed. These lines are not written with the intention of belittling those who are probably doing their very best for New Zealand, but I do think it is high time we made a greater effort to take our rightful place in the government of our native country.—l am, etc.,
