THEFT FROM SHOP

A PLEA OF GUILTY

Pleading guilty through an interpreter to the theft on September 1 of three ladies' woollen vests, of a total value of Cs 9d, the property of L. Evans and Co,, Luigi Mollo, a fisherman, aged 30, was convicted by Mr. R. Ferner, S.M., in the Magistrate's' Court yesterday, and ordered to come up for sentence if called upon within twelve months. ■■

Senior-Sergeant J. A. Dempsey said that shortly after 1 p.m. yesterday the accused entered a shop in Cuba Street. While the assistant went to the window, he, was seen to pick up three women's vests and place them in his pocket. When arrested by Mr. Evans, he produced one vest and £2. His knowledge of English was small, and it was not known whether he intended to pay for the vests to avoid arrest.

Mr. A. J. Mazengarb, who appeared for the accused, said that his client went in to purchase articles for .his wife in Italy. When arrested, he had a bank draft on him, as he intended sending money to his wife. About ten days before his launch had run ashore at Island Bay, which may have had some effect on him. He had a good record, and; had not come under the notice of the police before.
