BEEF CATTLE PRICES

FIRM LIVESTOCK MARKETS

The demand for beef cattle continues to be very- strong at the livestock sales held in various parts of the Dominion and further increases in prices were reported yesterday. At the local sale most classes of- stock were firm and prime heavy cows and heifers were dearer' by 10s to 15s a head. At Addington fat stock more than maintained the high rates of last week's sale. Values generally were firm at the Westfield fat stock sale. A feature was the further advance in sheep, although beef steadied after last weeks rise. There was a larger yarding of ox beef. Bidding was spirited at late rates for prime cattle, but medium and plain eased slightly. There was also a larger yarding of cows and heiiers which included a lot of plain cattle which eased in value. A small yarding of sheep resulted in a very keen inquiry. Rates again improved for all classes. _ .. Values for beef at the Burnside stock sale improved considerably, but the market for mutton showed a slight decrease. JOHNSONVILLE PKICES. Wright, Stephenson, and Co., Ltd., and Abraham and .Williams, Ltd., offered a small yarding.of bullocks and a large yarding of cows and heifers at the Johnsonvile sale yesterday. The bullocks comprised chiefly heavyweight cattle with a few pens of light and unfinished sorts. Prime heavy bullocks sold readily at prices firm on last week, medium weight being 5s to 10s per ; head easier, while light and unfinished showed no change. Prime heavy cows and heifers met with spirited competition with prices being 10s to 15s up on last week, medium-weight cows and heifers showing no alteration. Cows ex dairy met with a keen sale at prices firm on last week. There were no runners and; vealers offered. The sheep yarded were of exceptionally good quality wethers and ewes, with a few pens of medium-weight hoggets. Extra prime heavy wethers met with a keen sale and, considering the quality and weight, sold on a par. Medium to heavyweight wethers sold readily at prices slightly firmer than those ruling last week. Lightweight wethers were keenly sought after, and these sold at prices on a par. All classes of ewes met with a keen sale. Extra-heavyweight ewes sold at prices from Is 6d to 2s per head up on last "week, medium-weight ewes Is up, and light and unfinished ewes at late rates. Hoggets showed no alteration. Wright, Stephenson, and Co., Ltd., offered a small yarding of sheep and a good yarding of cattle at the Marton sale yesterday. A particularly nice line of woolly wether hoggets offered on account of Mr. Jas. ■ Gill (Westbush) realised 25s 9d. Competition for fat cattle was again very keen, and twp trucks of fat Hereford and Shorthofai cows on account of Mr. O. H. Berfbam (Morland), were sold at £9 6s and £9 7s. Prices were as fpllows:— Sheep: Woolly wether, hoggets, to 25s 9d. Cattle: Fat Hereford and shorthorn cows, £9 6s to £9 7s; forward cows, £6 to £6 15s; fat cows, dairy sorts, £3 15s to £4'los; yearling Polled Angus-shorthorn cross steers, £6 5s to £6 12s 6d; yearling shorthorn steers, £6 ss; three-year Jersey heifers on drop, £6 10s to £7. Pigs: Weaners, 18s to 21s; slips. 22s to 275. Dalgety and Co., Ltd., rdport a total clearance as follows:—Medium w.f.w. hoggets, 21s lid; heifer, just calved, £4; forward dairy cows, £2 15s; porkers. 335.' LEVIN SALE. The usual weekly sale was held at Levin on Tuesday by Messrs. Abraham and Williams, Ltd:, who report that there were small yardings in all sections, with the result that prices were high, particularly in the case of porkers. The prices for cattle remained on a par with late rates. Realisations were as follows:— Sheep: Fat ewes, 31s to 37s 2d; fat wethers, 30s to 37s Id; prime hoggets, 29s to 375; store.eweg, 14s Cd. Pigs: Slips, 18s; stores, 28s, 295, 325; weaners, 21s to 21s-6d; light porkers, 32s to 435; medium do., 40s to 48s; heavy do., £2- 11s to £2 16s. Cattle: Store cows, 39s to 40s; fat cows, £2 10s, £2 18s, £3 Is, £3 7s 6d. £4 12s, £4 17s 6d; vealers, 22s 6d to £2 10s; yearling heifers, £2 17s 6d, £3 10s, to £4 ss. Dairy stock: Springing heifers, £3 15s. £5 10s, £6 ss; springing .cows, £4 17s 6d; cows (calved), £3 10s. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency, Ltd., report that at their weekly stock ■ sale held yesterday there was a medium yarding in both cattle and pigs. There was brisk competition in the good attendance of buyers, with the result that a total clearance was made at the following prices:—Fat cows, ex dairy, light, £4 to £5; medium do., £5 5s to £6 10s; heavy, £6 15s to £7 15s; light fat Jersey heifers, £4 15s to £5 10s; store cows, £2 to £3 7s 6d; yearling coloured heifers, £3; scrub yearling bulls, £3 10s; dairy cows, £3 10s, £6; springing heifers, £4 to £5 15s; light porkers, 35s to £2; heavy do., £2 5s to £2 10s; good store pigs, 25s to 31s; medium do., 17s to 21s.
