LONDON HIDE MARKET.

Weddel and Co. report that the London hide market at July 23 had at last taken a turn for the better, and Argentine sound frigorifico oxhides reached 70 pesos, a gain of 5 pesos since last report. In pence this is 5' 3-Bd, with sellers now asking 72 pesos, say, 5Jd. In most cases business has been done for European account, but it would not be surprising if the Americans also: played some part before very long. The latest news of the drought scare is much better. In the first place the. drought itself appears to have broken, and no drastic killing'programme will be put into operation by the Government. In any case, the latter will take charge of any drought hides .arid market them carefully, as they did last year. This statement gave a good deal of confidence to the North American buyers, and it was' immediately reflected with a better market there. Certain miscellaneous and colonial hides have improved. For instance, freezer cowhides of 30/501b have sold at 5Jd, with sellers now holding for l-8d more. There is-very little, to be said as regards any change in the leather', situation; most tanners have firm'ideas. It is natural to suppose that this market will become firmer now. that the market for raw material is so much better.. .
