BIG BOXING TOURNEY

LENGTHY PROGRAMMES

Tomorrow will usher in the 1936 New Zealand amateur boxing championships, which arfe scheduled to commence at 7.30 p,m. at the Wellington Show Stadium, with 21 TJouts on the opening night. As the rules provide for three three-minute rounds the programme will be a lengthy one, even allowing for the usual percentage of knock-out victories.

Managers of the various teams which are already in town report that their, charges are in excellent fettle, with the exception of K. Easton, a Timaru welterweight, who has been compelled to withdraw through having injured a hand while training. To replace his contest one of the bouts from the big Saturday programme will be staged tomorrow night.

The local gymnasiums today were a hive of industry as the visiting competitors went through their paces as a final tuning up for the hard work ahead of them. In some instances competitors will find it necessary to work ofl excess poundage before the official weighing-in tomorrow.

The boxing tournament and the Rugby football Test match have "resulted in the local hotel accommodation being at a premium. Visitors to the city for the weekend will certainly be well catered for, with two sporting fixtures of national importance. The tramway department is making special arrangements to provide for the crowds* which will be going to and from the Show Stadium on Friday and Saturday nights.

A small but confident team is that from the West Coast, a district noted for its fighters. W. Hawes (featherweight) won the Australasian title in 1934, and Marsh, who carries a knockout punch, won the light-heavyweight Canterbury championship this year. ...
